Happy centennial to me!

It's not my 100th birthday, but it's the 100th post since the birth of this blog last November. Does she have it in her to post another 100 not ready for prime time mindless rants and musings of the Moey variety? You bet she does! Here's a comprehensive in depth look at today’s hot hockey topics:

Sergei K - screw him

Robert Lang - congrats on your contract but I wish you were still playing for us, thanks for the memories. Sniff.

For the first time in 100 years the Habs will start the season captainless - the downside to this is the angst and handwringing will continue with the fans and the media. The actual team (and I) could care less.

The Phoenix fiasco continues, the judge has rejected both Jimmy’s and the NHL's bids. Hmmm, Mr. Moey wrote me a blank check a while back in case of emergencies. Note to self - check the date.

Sundin retires - yawn.

Habs have finished their team bonding/bondage sessions - I heard there were blindfolds involved. Whatever it takes.

24 hours before the puck drops at the ACC, 24 hours and 2 minutes before the gloves come off.

Last minute breaking news, Markov, Gionta and Gill will wear the "A'' for tomorrow nights' game

Rainy days and Mondays....some thoughts.

Rainy days and Mondays, two of my not so favorite things. I don’t particularly like rain and Monday’s just plain suck. I ended up leaving late for the office this morning, Mr. Moey had an I.T. emergency during the night and he left the house at 2:30 AM. He had booked an appointment for an inspector to come to our house at 8:00 AM and he wouldn’t make it back in time to meet with him, so I stuck around. As it turned out, the inspector had to cancel the appointment due to a personal emergency. While I sat waiting for Mr. No Show, I tuned into my morning sports radio program and to no surprise, the Price versus Halak debate was the topic du jour.

Some people feel very strongly about the fact that Halak had a better camp and clearly emerged the superior goaltender. Others felt that Price is the anointed number one and he should get the start on Thursday against the Leafs. I’m in the second camp, I’m not on the Price bandwagon per say, but I understand the logic behind the Habs’ brain trust. See: Marc-Andre Fleury, check out his stats and story on Wikipedia, there are a lot of similarities to Price, but keep in mind Fleury is two years older. He had his share of ups and downs but the Pens patience and Fleury’s perseverance paid off, in spades.

My concern is not with Price or Halak, but with the fans and the media. Every goal that Price lets in is dissected and put under a microscope. I’m sure that if the shot came from a sniper perched on top of the Texas Book Depository and Price keeled over in his net, there would be murmurs in the crowd, “that was a softie, he should have had that, my granny could have stopped that.”

People, get a grip, he will let in goals and sometimes they will be softies, maybe one every game. Like it or not, it could be another two years before Price emerges as the franchise goaltender we want and need him to become and if the relentless scrutiny and pressure doesn’t stop my biggest fear is that it may not be with us.

I also had some time to surf the net and I came across an interview with George Laraques. He made some comments on how much chattier and cheerier the dressing room is now. I’m not surprised to hear that, it’s like going to the same job and seeing the same people day after day, it gets boring and routine. The Habs’ dressing room is full of new faces and personalities, of course it’s chatty and everyone is getting to know each other. That interview was acquired and printed solely for the purpose of putting a huge question mark over Koivu’s leadership. Let it go, everyone is moving on and so should the media, we’ve had enough already.

I have stated in a few previous blogs that Mr. Moey is not a hockey fan. That might be the biggest understatement of the year. Picture this, June 1993. The Habs are in the finals against the Kings. We have a room full of people over because we were one of the few that had a 50” TV screen back in the day. Mr. Moey is lying on the floor; he dozes off and accidentally rolls over the remote. The game is in overtime and suddenly the channel switches. The shrieks and cussing woke the poor tired soul up as we frantically try to find the remote. Meanwhile the Habs score; we managed to catch it on the replay after he was banned from the room. Need I say more?

Decorating dilemma......

Mr. Moey has been spending a lot of time in the basement redoing some TV and computer wiring from top to bottom throughout the house. It’s a typical man thing, spending countless hours doing something that no one will ever notice instead of putting a coat of paint on a wall that desperately needs it. He came out of his dungeon the other day and said, “Moey you’ll have to take those posters off the wall down there, those guys are all gone.” We have an unfinished basement so I had put up a few Habs players just to give the room a bit of color. I took a look, and sure enough, there was Saku, Kovy, Tanguay and Komisarek, plus a centennial poster with these four and Price on it. Sigh.

Well, one thing is for certain and as God is my witness Saku Koivu will never come down from that wall wearing the CH. There will only be two exceptions - a) if we move or b) when I’m carried out feet first and knowing Mr. Moey and his separation anxiety issues, moving is highly unlikely so I guess it will be the latter. I’m thinking of building a small alter under Saku, where I can place a few candles. A shrine of sorts.  I personally feel the man should be canonized; Saint Saku has a nice ring to it. Kovy can stay, when Ottawa has their fill of him, he could be back. Tanguay gets a pass too; I liked him while he was with us and would have been happy if he had returned.

Now, I’m left with Mr. Komisarek, (she claps her hands in glee) ”oohh Mikey ripping you off the wall just won’t cut it, you deserve special treatment, a fitting demise for being such a traitor to the CH.” So here’s the plan Mikey, my youngest child (cat) hails from Texas, he’s living and breathing proof that everything IS bigger in Texas, all 24 cuddly pounds of him. He has the cutest little twang when he meows, it sounds more like me’yall. Mikey, your mug is going to line the big Texans’ litter box, he’s the proud purveyor of the biggest and steamiest pile of poop you could ever imagine and I think it will be more meaningful coming from a fellow countryman.

I will be putting up new posters during the season when my Canadiens' magazine starts rolling in;  they always contain a pop out poster of the player being showcased in that issue. This blog post is a warning to all the newcomers, if you don’t want to suffer the same fate as traitor Mikey, and you want to remain on Moey’s wall of fame even after you are no longer a Hab, please govern yourselves accordingly.

I like!

I really have the feeling that our new team is in very good coaching hands this season.  My first edition of the Canadiens' magazine came in the mail yesterday and there is a good article on Jacques Martin.  Some interesting stats,  a comparison scale of games coached before stepping behind the Habs bench was an eyeopener for me. Scotty Bowman - 238 games, Jacques Demers - 640, Jacques Martin - 1098.  He was the winner of the 1999 Jack Adams award and is the most experienced coach in Habs history.  I liked his third period adjustments last night.  I don't find his pre or post game interviews boring at all.  He has a no nonsense, sensible approach.  He also dismisses the "defensive coach" notion that people seem to have about him.  He states that in his early years with Ottawa , they didn't have much offensive talent. He said they had to adjust to the game they were capable of playing, his philosophy is that when you don't have the puck you are on defense and when you do you're on offense.  Last nights' third period was fast, exciting offensive hockey.  Carey Price looked comfortable in nets, from what I've heard Martin is having more of a father-son relationship with him rather than a coach - player one.  Whatever it takes Jacques, I'm all for it. Is it too early to get the silver polish out?

Grab your pitchforks! Habs lose 6-1 to Sens!

Noooooooo!  Say it ain't so!  The Habs aren't allowed to lose ANY games!  What were they thinking?  The mob is out in full force today gathering kindling to light up under Carey Price.

In all seriousness folks, I didn't listen to the game last night, I was doing a crazy thing called socializing and spending quality time with Mr. Moey.  That will stop immediately at the start of the regular season.  One loss and the madness begins....the handwringing, pissing and moaning,  a sure sign that hockey's back.

Benedict Moey?

I received the following email from an Anaheim Ducks blogger:

Nice to hear from you, Maureen. And nice to hear I have a reader that's a Habs fan. Glad to hear you're rooting for the Ducks now that we have Saku. He seems to be a great guy and we're looking forward to watching him play here.

Thanks for the email. I appreciate it.

- Adam

Yup, I'm wearing two caps this year and I'm proud of it.  You got anything to say about it?  Bring it on!

Meanwhile, back in Hablsand the boys got off to a decent start last night.  From what I've  heard and read Price was solid in nets (phew) and our newest aquisitions made a splash.  Even though it's only an exhibition game, those pesky Panthers always gave us a run for our money, we totally dictated the play in the first two periods.  I'm not concerned about the third, it was a chance for the young guns to show their stuff and Price was on the bench.  I'm looking forward to tonights' game, I always liked games between Ottawa, they play the same style of hockey, skilled and speedy. Kovy is a no show, I guess he's saving his glorious return for the real season.

The real test for the new Habs will be when they play the "Bay Street Bullies" aka the loathsome Leafs, or as I like to call them "goons in training".  Like it or not, the Leafs tend to beat us more often than not, without a lot of talent.  We need to make a statement, show them there's a new sheriff in town and the days of ass-kickings are over.

Pizza, beer and wine on tap at Chez Moey's tonight.  I have visitors from Toronto coming in this afternoon, but they're ex-Montrealer's and die hard Habs fans.  It's nice to have company to watch a game with, Mr. Moey is not a fan.  He can get the refills.

Cheers and go Habs go!!

Mid week ramblings and mini rant..........

I'll start this post by saying I've had a really crappy few days. I've got that rotten flu/cold or whatever it is. Not fun. The endless controversy over who should be the next captain of the Habs has drained what little energy I have left. I can't turn on the radio, open a newspaper or put on the local news without it smacking me in the face. Yes, I'm a Habs fan, but I'm not obsessed, this relentless coverage is past ridiculous. It's worse than the Sundin saga from last year. I would love if training camp was closed to the media along with the locker room after games. I just want to see them play hockey, that's it. Let's face it, nobody knows how this team is going to look, not the media, not the fans, the players nor the coach or the GM and certainly not those idiots at TSN that are making predictions.

A couple of positive things among the muck, Carbo has landed a gig on HNIC. I was a very strong Carbo supporter during his tenure in Montreal but unfortunately he just didn't have the experience to deal with the shit storm that hit the Habs last season. I still like the guy and wish him well and I hope to hell he's replacing Mike Millbury.

Has anyone heard about the CBC special Battle of the Blades? Ex NHL'ers pairing up with figure skaters, an on ice version of Dancing with the Stars. I think it should be mandatory for all retired players to participate at least once. All I can picture is Kovy throwing his partner into the air, forgetting about her and dipsy doodling down to the other end of the ice. Classic stuff.

I would also like to thank some of my fellow bloggers (listed at the right of this blog) for keeping me sane and entertained this off season with humor, interesting tidbits and most importantly, just plain common sense. It's a rare commodity folks; I tip my hat to all of you.

First exhibition game tomorrow night, hockey's back, let us rejoice!

I hate when this happens.........

Recognize this guy in the specs?  Yup, our boy Kovy.  He was touring the plant where I work at 10:00 this morning.  Was I there?  Noooooooooo.  I was off to another plant on what turned out to be an non-existant emergency.  One of my co-workers was nice enough to get an autograph and snap this pic for me. I'm pissed beyond words. Sigh.  How was your day?

Memories.....of the way we were

I'm watching the second period of game five of the 2008 playoffs against Boston on the NHL network.  I'm beside myself.  Price has made some amazing saves.  I missed this game as I was on vacation at the time.  Who could have possibly predicted the mess that would follow in 2009?

I'm going to watch game seven against the Bruins at 10:00 P.M. for one last look at them, then it's time to move on and get with the program, rookie training camp begins tomorrow.

Dear Bob,

I hope you've enjoyed your summer, I know you were busy in July but I'm sure you found some time to relax. So now it's almost that time of year again. I'm asking you for a favor Bob, you need to throw me a fricken' bone. It doesn't have to be a soup bone (that would be a Koivu or a Kovy) a chicken wing will suffice. Let me explain. I need someone on the team that I like, yes of course if they're wearing the CH I like them all, but someone that I REALLY like. I know it doesn't make hockey sense, but it makes Moey sense. I never warmed to the brothers or the Plekster. They never speak, I don't even know if they have personalities.  It's hard to get attached to door knobs, Bob. A blogging buddy of mine named Robert L wrote a nice piece on Robert Lang. Remember him Bob? Our best player last year, as I recall. Good all round guy too, and he could actually get the K brothers to produce, Bob. Check out my buddies' blog, I'll make it easy for you, here's the link.

http://www.habseyesontheprize.com/

And in case you forget what he looks like:

Isn't that a good idea? I REALLY REALLY liked Robert Lang, I think I might be able to ease up on my Prozac prescription if you sign him for a year and maybe blow out the candles and turn the lights on again at night. And between you and me, this fetal position is really starting to get uncomfortable and the thumb sucking is ruining my manicure.

Just one little chicken wing Bob, that's all I ask.

Sincerley,

Moping  Hoping in Beaconsfield
